Introduction
The GEMPACK programs consist of:
Command-line programs which can be re-compiled to run on most computers, including the Mac.
GUI programs which run only under Windows. These include useful viewing programs such as ViewHAR, TABmate, and AnalyseGE, and also
GEMPACK-based programs such as GTAPAgg and RunGTAP. These will not run as "native" Mac applications.
GEMPACK for Mac OS X
'GEMPACK for Mac OS X' is a 'wrapper', prepared by Joe Francois, that allows the GEMPACK GUI programs to be installed and run on the Mac (using
Wine (WineSkin)) alongside native Mac applications. You need an Intel-based Mac
running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) or later. The package could be used in several ways:
You could use the included executable-image version of GEMPACK to formulate and solve CGE models. Programs such as ViewHAR, TABmate,ViewSOL,
etc work more or less as they do under Windows. You would need a normal GEMPACK licence (either executable-image or source-code). Some tasks might
require you to use a command prompt: Wine's DOS-like terminal shell supplied with the package.
You might use included GTAP-related programs such as RunGTAP, a program which runs the standard GTAP model (it needs no licence). Or, you
might run GTAPAgg, a program to prepare aggregations of the GTAP database. To use this you need to additionally purchase (from GTAP) and install a GTAP database licence and a set of GTAP database files.
You might use included GEMPACK viewing programs such as ViewHAR and ViewSOL in conjunction with a separately-purchased source-code version of
GEMPACK running natively on the Mac. The 'native' programs, all command-line, would include supplied utility programs, and TABLO-generated
programs to solve your CGE model. You would use the Unix Terminal shell which is part of Mac OS X to run command-line programs, and
ViewHAR/ViewSOL/AnalyseGE (under Wine) to look at numbers.
Download and Install
The package may be downloaded from here [coming soon]. To install, simply:
drag the file GEMPACK to your applications directory.
drag the GEMPACK Apps folder to your applications directory.
Program behaviour under Wine is similar but not identical to behaviour under Windows. A few features do not work under Wine. Support is very
limited since:
'GEMPACK for Mac OS X' has been prepared as a volunteer effort by Joe Francois.
The GEMPACK developers have little Mac experience and only one Mac PC (a MacBook Pro running Lion).
