Corn and Soy

Corn (maize) is Indianas most popular crop, with around 7 million acres planted in 2010. Traditionally, corn must be rotated every 2 or 3 years with soybean to avoid exhausting the soil. However, high subsidies to corn ethanol have recently encouraged successive corn-on-corn cropping at the cost of higher fertilizer inputs.

A favourite Hoosier snack is the corn dog -- a hot dog coated in cornbread batter, deep fried in hot oil, and served on a wooden stick.
