Euchre

Euchre  is a trick-taking card-game (like bridge) played with a reduced deck. It is the game responsible for introducing the joker card into modern packs, and is related to Loo, a seventeenth-century game of bad repute. During the 19th century, it was widely regarded as the national card game of the USA, but it is now less popular. However, it retains a strong following in Indiana and other Midwest states.

See the Wikipedia article.

A similar game, called 500, is popular in Australia.

During July 2016, the Indiana Gaming Commission, as part of a campaign against illegal gambling, warned several Senior Citizens Centers that playing Euchre for small prizes (such as canned peaches and toilet paper) was illegal. After widespread protests,  the Governor, Mike Pence, instructed the Gaming Commission to "ensure common sense prevails" in its actions.
