NoDupes Selection

The Edit..NoDupes selection command will change selected text by removing duplicate lines. Suppose you selected the list:

Bob

Mary

John

Bob

Wilbur

NoDupes would turn this into:

Bob

Mary

John

Wilbur

ie, the second occurrence of Bob would be removed. The comparison of list items is not case-sensitive and ignores leading or trailing blanks.

NoDupes is useful when preparing mappings. For example, suppose we wish to aggregate 57 sectors to about 20 sectors. We first paste the 57 elements of the source set into Column 1 of a spreadsheet. Then in the first 57 rows of column 2 we insert names of the broader sector to which each of the 57 will be mapped. Then we paste this second column (containing the mapping) into TABmate, select it, and choose NoDupes. The result will be a list specifying the target set (or range) of the mapping -- you could paste this set list into ViewHARs Create Set dialog.
