CSV files

CSV stands for comma separated values. CSV files are a text format file, which you can open and edit either in a spreadsheet like Excel or in an text editor like NotePad. The following 3 lines could be a CSV file:

Results,North,South,East,West

Grains,1.2,1.3,1.6,2.2

RootCrops,3.2,1.7,2.5,3.3

It's best to use the suffix or extension CSV for these files: that helps Windows and Excel to know what sort of file they are.

The GEMPACK Text file format is a family of file types that GEMPACK programs can read. Some GEMPACK text files (including those created by ViewHAR) are also CSV files.

If you edit a CSV file within Excel, you will notice that Microsoft has a strong desire for you to save your modified data in its own Excel format. You might receive threatening messages about losing your data when you save in CSV format. You will find by experimenting that these messages can be ignored.

Another Microsoft quirk: while the CSV file is open in Excel, no other program can use, delete, or rename it!
