Make sure that Windows shows the file extensions

File extensions are the 3-letter suffixes, like HAR TAB EXE CMF XLS that Windows uses to work out what is the type of a particular file.

For some insane reason, modern versions of Windows by default DO NOT SHOW file extensions in the Explorer or in Open and Save Dialogs.

With file extensions hidden, Windows is confusing and difficult to use, especially when saving files. When you save a file with a new name, programs find it hard to guess what extension you want.

By default, ViewHAR tries to make Windows show file extensions (see Options). You can also control this yourself, as follows:

In My Computer or Windows Explorer,

On the View menu, click Options.

To show file extensions, ensure the Hide File Extensions for known file types option is NOT checked.

To hide file extensions, check the Hide File Extensions for known file types option.

The exact method for doing this may vary slightly with different versions of Windows.
