GEMPACK Licence May Be Required

The GEMPACK program used by RunGTAP to solve the GTAP model is able to solve the model with highly aggregated data sets (for example, a 3-commodity, 3-region aggregation of the GTAP data) or, provided you have enough memory on your computer, with highly disaggregated data sets (for example, a 20-commodity, 15-region aggregation of the GTAP data).

If you are working with an aggregation with up to 9 tradeable commodities and up to 9 regions, you will not require a GEMPACK licence to solve the model.

If you are working with an aggregation of the GTAP data with more than 9 tradeable commodities and more than 9 regions, it is highly likely that you will require a Large-simulations GEMPACK licence, or a more powerful GEMPACK licence (for example, a Source-code or Executable-image licence).

If you are working with an aggregation with more than 10 tradeable commodities but less than 10 regions (for example, 14 tradeable commodities and 7 regions), or if you are working with an aggregation with more than 9 regions but less than 9 tradeable commodities (for example, 7 tradeable commodities and 15 regions), you may need such a GEMPACK licence. [As a rough rule of thumb, multiply the number of tradeable commodities by the number of regions. If this exceeds 100, it is highly likely that you will need such a licence. If this is less than 90, you probably wont.]

If your simulation is large enough to require at least a Large-simulations GEMPACK licence and you do not have such a licence, RunGTAP will report that your simulation ended with an error. The LOG file displayed on your screen will indicate clearly that you need a GEMPACK licence.

To obtain a Large-simulations GEMPACK licence (the cost is approximately $US300), you must contact GEMPACK (not the GTAP Project at Purdue University).
