Results for Individual Years

In the lower box (Results for Individual Years) you can look at the Solution files, Log files, data files or other output files for each year of one of the runs.

In this part of the Results page, think left to right.

1. First select the type of run (Base, Base Rerun or Policy).

2. Then select the type of file you wish to look at. If you want to look at one of the updated data or output data files, select the Logical name of the file. Otherwise select one of Solution, Log or Accuracy.

Solution and Log are always shown in the type of files list box.

Accuracy Summary is only shown if the standard solution method (as shown on the Sim Overview page) extrapolates from 3 multi-step solutions.

Data files which are input and updated are shown, as are data files which are output (those produced via Write statements in the TAB file). But constant input data files are not shown.

3. Then select from the right hand box the year you wish to see.

Added with Version 3.41 (February 2009). If you have selected a data file (one which relates to a Header Array file (not a text file) which is updated input or is output only), you will see All AHO and All CHO at the bottom of this list. If you select either of these items and then click on the View button you will be shown a single Header Array file which shows the data in the versions of this file for all relevant years. Click here for more details.

4. Click the relevant button (View or AnalyseGE). [The AnalyseGE button is only available if you have selected Solution file in choice 2.]

If you have selected a data file (updated or output data file) in the type of file box, what you will see if you click on the View button depends on the type of run and on the year selected.

Usually you will see the file produced during the simulation for the year selected (choice 3 above).

If you have selected an output file and the year selected is before the start of the relevant run, there is no such file.

If you have selected an updated data file and the year selected is the one just before the run selected starts, you will see the relevant file as used in the first simulation for that run.

If you have selected Rerun or Policy and you have selected an updated data file and the year selected is earlier than the year just before the Policy starts, there is no such file.

The two labels below the type of file box give more details. The first of these labels shows the logical file name and its labelling information (between the # # in the TAB file). The second of these labels makes if clear what you will see if you click on the View button.

The program only calculates solutions for the Rerun and Policy for the years starting at the year of the first policy shock and subsequent years to the end of the period (see Where the policy run starts). Years before the first policy shock are labelled (pre-policy) and for these years no Solution or log file or data files available for Base Rerun | Policy.

When you click on the View button, the relevant program runs, depending on the type of file you have asked to view.

If you ask to look at a Solution file, ViewSOL runs.

If you ask to look at a Header Array data file, ViewHAR runs.

Otherwise your selected text editor runs.

[If the software cannot find the relevant program, you will be asked where it is located before the results can be shown.]

Whenever you ask to look at any of these results, the software checks to see if the file with the appropriate name currently on you hard disk is the same one that was created when you last carried out the run. This check can only be done if you chose to record times and dates of files created during the relevant run.

Note that, if an output file (one produced via Write statements in the TAB file) is selected in the type of file box (see choice 2 above), what you will see if you click on the View button changed with Version 3.35 (September 2008).

With that version or later, you will indeed see the output file produced during the simulation for the year shown in choice 3 above.

Example. Suppose that you have selected an output file and year 2005 of the Policy. If the simulation for year 2005 of the Policy started from data for year 2003 (that is, this period is 2 years long), the name of the file will end with 2003-2005.har. Whether this output data file contains data relevant to year 2003 or 2005 (or both) depends on whether the output file contains pre-simulation or post-simulation data (or both) and that, in turn, depends on the Write statements in your TAB file. It is your responsibility to work out what year the data at the different headers corresponds to.

Prior to that version, you would have seen the output file produced in the simulation for the next year. [That may have been ok for output files containing only pre-simulation data but was very confusing for output files containing post-simulation data.]

Note that, even if your model has a Display file, Display will not be shown in the type of file box so you will not be able to access Display files via the Results for Individual Years part of the Results page. Instead you will need to open them individually via the Text file menu item under the View menu.
