Exporting Data to a Spreadsheet Program

There are several ways to export data from ViewHAR to a spreadsheet program:

The Export...Copy command copies the currently visible data to the Windows ClipBoard. From there it can be pasted into a spreadsheet. See Copy Screen to ClipBoard. Advantage: quick and easy; Disadvantage: does not copy the whole file or the whole of a 3-D matrix.

The Export...Save screen as CSV file command saves just the currently visible data as a CSV file.

If you are viewing [a slice or subtotal of] a matrix with 3 or more dimensions, the above two Export commands will copy only the currently visible 2-dimensional view. To export the whole of a 3-dimensional matrix to a spreadsheet in one operation, you must use the File..Save as command:

The File..Save as command can save the whole file (or just the selected header) as an GEMPACK text file. This is a special type of CSV file which can be opened by other GEMPACK programs as well as by a spreadsheet program. However, the GEMPACK text files created by ViewHAR do not contain row and column labels for matrices.

The File..Save as command can also save the whole file (or just the selected header) as an Excel file. The XLS file does contain row and column labels for matrices, but can only be read by Excel.

Notes:

You can copy individual rows or columns of numbers from the Data window to the clipboard. To copy a column, control-click (ie, hold down Ctrl key while clicking left mouse button) on the column heading. To copy a row, control-click on the row label (left-most cell). This also works in ViewSOL.

the command line utility XLS2HEAD will extract a single matrix from an XLS file and store it in a new HAR file.
